Hi all,
After reading your responses to Stelarc's third ear project, a couple of questions:
Some of you mentioned that the medical resources used for the project could have been better used to help someone who actually needed surgery for health reasons. So, do you feel the same way about an artist who spends a large sum of money on lumber and builds a sculpture with it? After all - that lumber and labor could have been used for housing someone who needs a home. Or is that somehow different?
Also, now that living tissue can be grown outside the body in a laboratory, how do you feel about using this material for art? What are the ethical issues here?

Thats a good point about the materials being used. I think that using body parts is different from using lumber for sculpture. Sure that lumber could have been used to help build a home for someone, but i think of growing an extra ear is more of a waste than then the lumber for artwork. Building a home is something many people can learn to do, it doesn't require a college degree or extensive medical equipment. People who have no building experinece at all can even help out, just look at all the work done by habitat for humanity. They have help from many who have little or no experience building but want to help others. The ear on the other hand, requires medical treatment from highly trained medical officals. It is not a procedure that just anyone can do. You don't see groups of volunteers able to just help doing some stem cell research with no eduational background in it. This is why i feel opposed to this as form of art, but not using other more common materials to create work with.
